Using forums to promote my opportunity has been one of my favorite methods of generating free traffic for many reasons.
1. Targeted prospects and the public
2. Learn and contribute at the same time
3. The messages are a continuing source of exposure

The traffic is not going to shoot through the roof using the forums, but making a post and contribute to the community has very little time. When I get traffic from forums is largely going to be highly targeted traffic.
The most important use of the forums is making a catchy "signature box". Your signature box is simply a short message to be sent at the end of each post you make on the forum. Your signature must be catchy enough to make people want to click on the link to access the page.
